Moving The Cat

My wonderful Mama is down sizing.  Children flown (a good few years ago) and the family home is way too big for her to be rattling around in.  So it’s off to pastures new for The Inimitable Lady H.

She is having a bit of a; lets call it – a quandary shall we ?  What to do with the cat ?  Now usually, one would place said cat in a cat-box and pop it into the back of the car.  Put butter on it’s feet to stop it wandering once at the new Casa, and Bobs Yer Monkhouse – you’ve moved the cat.  Trouble is .. this ones been dead for 5 years….

Do we dig it up ?  Is that a bit weird ?  Well – yes … of course it is.  But this is Laurel the Cat – my Mama’s furry companion for 21 years.  I thought, way back then, she should have stuffed ‘LoLoL’ (it’s name .. I’m not talking in pre-pubescent tinterweb speak).  He’d have been easier to move, lets face it.  Joking aside it was bloody awful for her, for us all, losing Laurel, but I do remember thinking about this exact problem all those years ago.

So here we are … having to dig up our beloved family cat so he can be buried in the gardens of our next family home.  Creepy.

Preserving dead things isn’t unusual behaviour for the inimitable Lady H … my sons Pet Degu died while in her care, during a holiday he and I were taking.  Worried that he would be devastated and freak out on hearing that Buffy (The Degu) had died 2 weeks previously, Mama decided to pop him in a Butter carton in the garage freezer.  Next to the ice-pops and Richmond Sausages.  And do the big reveal on our return.  Once she’d thawed him out a bit.  Saying that he’d not long died, in the hopes that my son could grieve properly, and that she would help him bury the Degu, and it would be a nice neat life lesson (next to LoLoL no doubt .. we’d probably be digging the Degu up too !).

We got home – and the next day my son asked for his Degu, and Lady H told him the sad news.  My son said, after a few tears, and to our complete surprise, ‘It’s OK Nanny.  He’s in heaven now.  And I don’t want to see him dead.’  Pragmatic as per my fabulous son .. ahem !

Well.  Mama H promised to give Buffy the Degu a nice funeral in the back garden.

4 years later…

My sister was sorting out the garage freezer.

Found the Degu.

MuuuuuuM  !!!!!!  ❤
